What is Risography?

Riso is an environmentally-friendly printing method where artwork gets burned onto a stencil, which then gets repeatedly inked and rolled onto a piece of paper. This stencil is made from rice paper while the ink is made from rice bran oil. Since the ink is oil based, prints can smudge easily and need time to dry before another layer of color is rolled on top. This also causes imperfections such as printer roller tracks, smudging, and mis-registration.

Riso printing is a labor intensive and involved printing process, much more so than digital printing. Every design is manually adjusted and cut by a real human. This meticulous process results in unique pieces where imperfections only add to the charm and appeal.

All files must be delivered riso print-ready. If you don’t have experience with riso printing, the free templates by Split Arrow Print House are a great starting point. We do not offer file setup services at this time.

What is Spot Color?

Most digital printing is achieved using a four-ink standard process — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black (CMYK).

However with Riso, inks are layered on top of each other, one at a time. These inks are loaded into the printer one at a time and left to dry between colors. Most studios have a limited range of inks, otherwise known as spot colors. We are a six color studio:

Many Riso ink pigments are outside the CMYK color palette — so you can print more vibrant colors than possible with standard process inks.
